Academic Jazz Director

Job Description: The Academic Jazz Director will be responsible for directing BYU's Jazz Lab Band one evening a week. This position requires the successful candidate to relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of their employment. • They should demonstrate teaching principles of style, improvisation and rhythm section coordination. Duties/Expectations: • Direct the BYU's Jazz Lab Band • Assist with Jazz auditions as needed • Promote, recruit and finalize the Jazz Lab band roster as needed • Prepare, communicate and submit concert repertoire, programs, and performance venue • Exemplify and support the mission of BYU • Develop skills for music majors, specific to playing in a big band • Provide experience for Music Education majors in a jazz ensemble • Provide a jazz ensemble opportunity for non-music majors • Mentor students • Ability to effectively interact and instruct students • Leadership skills • Organization skills
