Position Summary: Spectrum Singers seeks a part‑time Accompanist to support the musical growth, rehearsal flow, and performance excellence of our diverse, intergenerational community choir. The Accompanist works closely with the Artistic Director to bring Spectrum Singers’ artistic vision to life through high‑quality rehearsal and performance support. This position averages approximately 5 hours per week during the choir’s Fall, Spring, and Pride seasons (August–June).

Spectrum Singers is a diverse, intergenerational (including youth), all‑voices (SATB), volunteer, non‑auditioned community choir in Spokane, WA. Our ~80 members range in age from 14 to 75 and represent many identities, backgrounds, and lived experiences. We are purposeful about being a safe and affirming space for gender and sexual minority populations and welcoming to people of all ages, races, religions, socioeconomic backgrounds, disability statuses, and more.

Responsibilities
Musical Support
Provide piano accompaniment for all weekly rehearsals (approximately 35 evening rehearsals per season).
Accompany various soloist rehearsals per concert cycle.
Play for a few weekend rehearsals or retreats per season.
Accompany sectionals as requested by the Artistic Director.
Provide accompaniment for auditions (approximately 4 audition nights per year).
Record individual vocal parts as needed, in collaboration with the Artistic Director.
Performance Support
Accompany both major concerts (Fall and Spring), including dress rehearsals.
Support several small community performances throughout the season (e.g., Spokane Pride Festival, North Idaho Pride, Pride in Perry, etc.
Participate in outreach or guest performances as scheduled.
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with the Artistic Director to support rehearsal pacing, musical interpretation, and performance preparation.
Communicate effectively and respectfully with choir members, section leaders, and board members.
Optional: Attend monthly board meetings as an ex‑officio participant.
Organizational Alignment
Uphold Spectrum Singers’ values of inclusivity, respect, professionalism, and positive community engagement.
Maintain confidentiality regarding choir members and organizational information.
Represent Spectrum Singers with professionalism in all interactions with members, donors, partner organizations, and the public.
Position Requirements
Strong piano proficiency and experience accompanying choirs, vocalists, or musical ensembles.
Ability to sight‑read and follow a conductor effectively.
Comfort working with singers of varied musical backgrounds and skill levels.
Commitment to inclusivity and alignment with Spectrum Singers’ mission and values.
Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Reliability, professionalism, and excellent communication skills.
Compensation
Spectrum Singers will provide a negotiable annual (11-month contract as an independent contractor) salary commensurate with experience. This contract is for one year and is renewable upon mutual agreement with the AD and the board of directors.
The accompanist is responsible for their own taxes and receives no employee benefits. Approved expenses may be reimbursed with prior authorization.
If the accompanist is unable to attend a rehearsal or performance, the cost of a substitute pianist will be covered by the choir.
Contract Notes
The accompanist is engaged as an independent contractor, not an employee.
The contract may be canceled under specific circumstances (mutual agreem:ent, COVID‑related issues, or government guidance), with 21‑day notice when applicable.
All musical materials created for the choir are considered “work made for hire” and belong to Spectrum Singers.
