Assistant or Associate Professor; nine-month tenure-track appointment beginning August 1, 2027. Salary and fringe benefits are competitive and commensurate with rank and experience.

The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee seeks candidates who have the ability to promote an atmosphere where all members of the university community feel welcome and can thrive.

The responsibilities of this faculty member include teaching bassoon to undergraduate and graduate students through applied lessons and studio classes, as well as teaching the bassoon component of the Double Reed Methods course within the music education curriculum. In addition, the faculty member will coach chamber ensembles and collaborate closely with the Woodwind Area on student recitals, hearings, proficiencies, juries, and the Woodwind Literature and Pedagogy course.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the effective recruitment of quality bassoon majors and high rates of student retention at the undergraduate and graduate level. The candidate will also collaborate closely with university band and orchestra directors to support placement, development, and performance of bassoon students within large ensembles.

Additionally, this faculty member will also provide leadership for the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music’s chamber music program by developing a sustainable organizational and curricular infrastructure that supports and advances chamber music throughout the College. Responsibilities will include coordinating chamber music activities across areas; working collaboratively with faculty; integrating community outreach and student recruitment initiatives through chamber music; and advancing innovative opportunities for cross-area collaboration, performances, residencies, and related programming.

The successful candidate will be highly organized and collaborative, possess significant experience in chamber music, and demonstrate proficiency and adaptability with administrative processes and technology. They will also bring the vision, initiative, and creativity necessary to develop an innovative, dynamic, and sustainable chamber music program that strengthens artistic collaboration, enriches the student experience, and expands the College’s engagement with its broader community.

The candidate will be expected to maintain a record of national and international creative/scholarly activity and provide service contributions appropriate for a university faculty member.

### Qualifications

Required Qualifications

1) Doctorate in the area of specialty required by time of appointment or equivalent professional experience

2) Evidence of successful teaching, recruitment and retention at the college/university level

3) Emerging or established national visibility as a performer as appropriate to rank

4) Ability to organize, communicate, and work effectively with faculty, students, and colleagues

5) Commitment to preparing versatile and innovative musicians for careers in the twenty-first century

6) Additional background or educational experience in chamber music.

Preferred Qualifications

1) Experience building, coordinating, or leading a chamber music program or comparable cross-area curricular initiative

2) Engagement with new music, including commissioning, premieres, or recording.

3) Experience with residencies, community outreach, or public programming built around chamber music.

Candidates for the rank of Associate Professor must: 

Meet the qualifications for being an Associate Professor within UTK’s faculty handbook and the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music bylaws. Qualifications typically include having served as an assistant professor for at least 5 years and having served as mentor to junior faculty.
