The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee seeks candidates who have the ability to promote an atmosphere where all members of the university community feel welcome and can thrive.

The Natalie L. Haslam College of Music invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in Music, Science, and Health. This is a rare and forward-looking appointment designed for a scholar-teacher who believes that a fuller understanding of music — how we hear it, perform it, feel it, analyze it, and create it — is enriched by understanding the human brain, human behavior, and the science behind how we interact with the art of music and human health.

The successful candidate will occupy a distinctive role at the intersection of music, medicine and health, neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, or other theoretical and applied sciences, contributing to both the core curriculum of the College and to an emerging cross-disciplinary research culture. The candidate will work in the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music with potential for collaboration with other colleges, and relevant health organizations.The successful candidate is expected to have either existing or strong potential for obtaining extramural funding.

**Teaching Responsibilities may include:**

Core lab-sequence instruction in music integrated with perspectives from the natural or social sciences appropriate to the candidate's expertise

Seminars in areas such as music and health, music perception and psychoacoustics, the neuroscience of musical experience, and other topics relevant to the candidate’s field

Student mentorship and research supervision in the candidate’s core field and related interdisciplinary fields

Online course development and delivery, with interest in expanding the College's reach into digital learning environments

**Research Profile**

We seek a candidate with an active research agenda that intersects with one or more of the following areas:

* Scientific applications of health, wellbeing, and/or and human development, including scientific approaches to understanding music’s role in health-related outcomes.
* The neuroscience of musical experience, including brain-music interaction, with particular attention to musical and cognitive aspects such as rhythm, harmony, melody, tonality, memory, and emotion.
* Computational, data-driven, and/or psychological approaches to music perception, emotion, musical structure, and performance, with a focus on their relationships to human health
* Machine learning and artificial intelligence applications for understanding how music interacts with human health, behavior, and perception

The University of Tennessee Natalie L. ### Qualifications

**Required Qualifications**

* PhD or related doctorate in a health-related science, neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, or a closely related field (ABD considered with degree conferred by August 1, 2027)
* Emerging or established national visibility in the field as appropriate to rank
* Demonstrated research activity and publication in relevant areas
* Demonstrated ability to communicate, organize work effectively, and collaborate productively with faculty, staff, and students.
* Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor should demonstrate a credible plan for developing an externally funded research program. Associate and Full Professor candidates should demonstrate a record of obtaining and/or leading external funding appropriate to their field.

**Preferred Qualifications**

* Evidence of successful teaching at the college/university level.

**Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor must:**

* Meet the qualifications for being an Assistant Professor within UTK’s faculty handbook and the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music bylaws; these are covered in the position's Required Qualifications.

**Candidates for the rank of Associate Professor must:**

* Meet the qualifications for being an Associate Professor within UTK’s faculty handbook and the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music bylaws; these qualifications normally include having served as an assistant professor for at least 5 years and having served as mentor to junior faculty.

**Candidates for the rank of Full Professor must:**

* Meet the qualifications for being a Full Professor within UTK’s faculty handbook and the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music bylaws; these qualifications normally include having served as an associate professor for at least 5 years and having served as mentor to junior faculty.
