Duties and responsibilities: • Administer and grow the schools band program in alignment with the RCSD vision and mission • Coordinate and correlate elementary and middle school band programs with that of the high school • Plan a balanced music program and organize daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time • Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student • Control the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and repairs to instruments as required • Establish and maintain within Board policy and administrative procedures, standards of student behavior that will provide an orderly productive environment during rehearsals and performances • Evaluate each students musical growth and performance, assessing each individuals contribution to the performance of the group • Select and requisition music, musical instruments and instructional aides and maintain required inventory records • Communicate with parents on student progress, practice, and program information regularly • Provide musical programs for a variety of school events and civic functions at the request of the supervising Principal and/or Superintendent • Participate in those functions and activities as described in the regular teacher job description • Maintain a professional awareness of current literature relating to assignment, including working knowledge of state and federal law, Board policy and administrative regulations • Obtain approval from the Principal for all fundraising activities • Obtain Principals approval in advance for all trips and contests • Have all students under supervision of certified personnel at all times after school approved activities, and supervise paraprofessionals/volunteers at all times • Prepare annual budget requests for consideration of the Principal/Administers band program • Demonstrate a high level of musicianship in both the knowledge and performance areas • Work with students, faculty, parents, public and others to promote effective band programs • Ability to organize and conduct concert band performance • Meet and instruct assigned classes at the assigned school and at times designated by Principal • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of Principal • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects to communicate these objectives to students • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved • Implement, by instruction and action, the districts philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities • Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation • Assist the administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher assistant(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluate the job performance (as applies) • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence by participation in training sessions and classes • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees • Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use • Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures • Maintain confidentiality • Regular, dependable/timely, and in person attendance is an essential function of this position • Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy • Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, GAB, all other district policies and applicable procedures and protocols as established by RCSD, and Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct (supervisor) Job title: Teacher Reports to: Principal Receives guidance from: Principal or Lead Teacher Overtime Status: Compliant with position, salary and FLSA regulations Job purpose: In keeping a tradition of excellence, a teacher in the Rankin County School District is expected to help students learn required subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible men and women.
