Dance Musician

In this role, musicians will provide support for both major and non-major modern and ballet dance classes. Unit: School Of The Arts MBU Department: Theatre & Dance Department Summary: Ranked by US News & World Report as a top-five arts and design school, VCUarts (arts.vcu.edu) includes over 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students with nationally recognized programs in design, visual and performing arts, and has an annual budget of $38 million and an endowment of more than $13.5 million. Duties & Responsibilities: Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts (VCUarts) Department of Theatre and Dance is establishing a pool of applicants for possible Dance Musician positions. Given these criteria, this pool will only be assessed when an opportunity arises. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Music or equivalent professional training, education, and experience One (1) year of experience playing for dance classes at the collegiate, professional, or pre-professional level Knowledge of/ability to learn ballet terminology Ability to sight-read provided music and improvise in various styles as needed Prepare multiple genres of music (e.g. classical, pop, musical theatre, opera, or others) which can be adapted for the ballet and/or modern dance class Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as an hourly employee at VCU.
