Director of Music
• Position Description:

The Director of Music oversees the musical life of University Lutheran Church. The Director of Music reports to the Lead Pastor and works closely with the Lead Pastor, Worship Planning Team, and music staff, scholarship students, and volunteers.
• Qualifications:

: Ability to direct vocal choirs and instrumental ensembles; strong musical proficiency, including ability to read music and a solid understanding of music theory; proficiency on playing the piano to accompany a rehearsal and teach vocal parts for the whole choir or in sectional rehearsals; ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, volunteers, and worship leaders; willingness to adopt ULC’s Mission, Vision and Welcome statements.

: Understanding and/or ability in other instruments like organ, handbells, and/or guitar; experience selecting music that supports worship; ability to plan, lead, and coordinate music for worship services in a church setting; effective leadership and communication skills, including the ability to manage music staff, recruit, train, and encourage musicians; familiarity with worship technology, including sound systems, microphones, and basic audio/visual tools; organizational skills to manage rehearsals, schedules, and special services; capacity and knowledge in music licensing reporting; Microsoft and Google computer skills; be able to pass a background check.
• Position type:

Part Time/Salary – 20 hours per week (50%) at a salary of $26,000 - $30,000.

Possibility of additional hours/compensation depending on skill set such as piano skills or ability to direct handbell choir.
• Work Schedule:

The position is to be understood as a 20-hour work week (50% time). The time is flexible and is to be worked out in consultation with the Lead Pastor. Specific hours include those for worship, meetings, rehearsals and arranged hours for lessons and planning.

• Employees begin earning paid vacation credits upon hire or rehire. Vacation is credited after the following years of service:

Three months through one year of part-time service: 8 hours paid vacation

One year through five years of part-time service: 40 hours paid vacation

Six or more years of part-time service: 60 hours paid vacation

An employee may carry over 20 hours of vacation into the next employment year, with a maximum accrual of 80 hours of paid vacation.
• Comp time will be compensated as straight time with approval by the Lead Pastor.
• Sick leave will be earned upon hire or rehire. Part-time employees are granted 4 hours for each month of employment.
• None offered at this time.
• Worker’s Comp – Provided
• As provided in the ULC budget and determined in consultation with the Lead Pastor as applicable to the job. Employee will attend the CORE “Understanding Racism” training or similar course.

• Responsibilities:

The duties of the Director of Music shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
• Supervision/mentoring/recruiting:
• Supervise and evaluate music staff and volunteers, providing day-to-day directions.
• Recruit new members for the choirs.
• Recruit, mentor and supervise the ULC Student Choral Scholarship recipients.
• Together with Lead Pastor and Personnel Committee, leads the hiring process for music staff positions.
• Worship and Music:
• Attend Worship planning meetings and serve as team leader for the music team.
• Work cooperatively with the Pastors, music staff, and others to plan Worship services in keeping with Lutheran liturgy.
• Include/update music on the digital worship planning grid.
• “Drop in” music portion into the worship scene plan.
• Participate in a pre-service run-through, collaborating with Technical Director for Worship before worship begins, assuring audio needs are known and fulfilled.
• Set the music schedule according to the liturgical seasons and the weekly lessons.
• Serve as cantor or coordinate and mentor a cantor as needed for worship.
• During the choral season, schedule and conduct rehearsals.
• During the choral season, conduct the Choir to lead the congregation in worship through liturgy and anthem(s). This will regularly involve 2 services a month. Conducting of choir will not be expected during the summer months.
• Coordinate or direct children’s choirs and include children and youth in worship services at least 2 times per semester.
• Produce the annual Choir Scholarship Fund Benefit Concert.
• Foster diverse expressions and genres of worship music.
• Select and purchase music, report and ensure music licensing and reporting.
• Coordinate any extra musical events to be held in the church, including funerals and wedding services, and arrange for needed accompanist.
• Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of all musical instruments.
• Budget:
• Manage the budget for the ULC Music program.
• Consistent with the budget for Worship: secure instrumentalists for special musical events, arrange for streaming, audio and/or videotaping, and submit payment requests.
• Teamwork/Collaboration/Communication
• Attend staff meetings.
• Hold quarterly meetings with the music staff.
• Prepare annual reports for music programs.
• Apprise the congregation and the community of musical events hosted by ULC.
• Submit music schedules and articles to the Communication Teams lead for publication in the LUX and bulletins.
• Prepare licensing reporting through CCLI and One License.
• Type and submit weekly credits for worship.
• Coordinate a meeting with the Racial Justice team to discuss ideas at least once a year.

5. Other tasks/activities as assigned by the Lead Pastor.
• Accountability: Lead Pastor
• Evaluation: The Lead Pastor will complete an annual performance review of the Director of Music, with salary recommendations, by August 31 yearly. A written copy of this review will be submitted to the Personnel Committee, as specified in Article XII.I.4 of the ULC Bylaws.

Employment is on an “at will” basis.

Pay: $26,000.00 - $35,000.00 per year
