Director of Music

The Director of Music reports to the Principal and supports the mission of Scranton Preparatory School by cultivating a vibrant culture of music that reflects the Jesuit commitment to forming the whole person – mind, body, and spirit. Rooted in the pursuit of the magis, the Director invites students into experiences of creativity, collaboration, and reflection through music, helping them discover and develop their unique gifts in service of the community.

As both educator and program builder, the Director of Music plays a central role in establishing and sustaining a dynamic music program that enriches the spiritual, artistic, and communal life of the school. The position combines teaching responsibilities with thoughtful development of a comprehensive and accessible music program.

A primary focus of this role is the development of a sustainable, student-centered music program. This includes creating accessible entry points for participation, cultivating ensemble offerings over time, and fostering a culture in which music is a visible and valued expression of community life. The Director of Music accompanies students in their musical growth, encouraging habits of reflection, collaboration, and excellence.

Working closely with the Fine Arts Department Chair, the Director of Music contributes to the strategic integration of music into the broader academic and co-curricular life of the school, seeking opportunities for interdisciplinary connection and creative expression. Through creativity, vision, and commitment to Jesuit education, the Director of Music will lay the foundation for a program that forms not only skilled musicians but reflective, compassionate young people prepared to share their gifts for the greater glory of God.

The ideal candidate will meet the following minimum requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in music or music education; master’s degree or MFA preferred.Teaching experience, ideally at the high school level.Experience in curriculum design and/or educational program development.Familiarity with using tablet technology (iPads) to support instruction and student engagement.Strong understanding of current educational trends in music.Established relationships with local professional musicians and music educator organizations (PMEA, etc.)Successful experience coordinating and implementing a variety of music programming, including student choral and/or instrumental ensembles.Strong organizational and project management skills.Ability to demonstrate and/or articulate planning, teaching, assessment, and classroom management skills.Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.Innovative mindset with a focus on continuous improvement.Experience collaborating with faculty and staff to integrate music programming into academic and co-curricular environments. Demonstrate cultural competency and a commitment to working respectfully with diverse populations and communities. A genuine enthusiasm for and interest in the co-curricular aspects of the school community.A willingness to animate the Catholic and Jesuit mission of the school and its philosophy and values.

Responsibilities for the Director of Music include, but are not limited to:

In the short term, envisioning and implementing opportunities for students to participate in music outside of the classroom through instrumental and vocal ensembles, small group collaboration, one-on-one consultations, and performances/showcases.In the long term, strategically planning the execution of every facet of music offerings both curricularly and co-curricularly.Engaging students with varying experience levels, and in turn, creating an environment where each student is known, challenged, and encouraged to grow. Facilitating opportunities for student musicianship not only to build skill, but to form students as reflective practitioners – attentive to beauty, disciplined in practice, and open to the ways music can deepen their awareness of self, others, and God.Designing and teaching courses that introduce students to foundational musical skills, theory, and appreciation – fostering both technical growth and a deeper understanding of music as a form of expression.Supporting the liturgical and spiritual life of the Prep community by collaborating in the planning and execution of liturgical music.Contributing to and collaborating with other Prep community events, including theatrical productions, graduations, fundraisers, etc. Ensuring that music remains an integral part of the school’s prayer, celebration, and shared experiences.Build relationships with external partners and educational organizations to bring innovative opportunities to the program.Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
