Job Description

DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Position Title: Director of Music

Status: Full Time, Exempt

Reports to: Pastor

The Director of Music is a professional minister who plans, accompanies, and directs the liturgical music which forms an essential component of the parish's worship.

I. Major Position Responsibilities

Liturgy

Establishes goals and programs to enhance the congregation's worship

Selects the music for Sunday masses and other liturgies in keeping with the liturgical season

Incorporates a broad range of musical styles

Serves as principal instrumentalist at parish liturgies and prayer events.

Develops and directs cantors and two adult choirs

Provides for the liturgical-musical formation of the congregation

Provides music for school liturgies

Recruits and trains liturgical ministers, vocalists, and instrumentalists

Schedules liturgical ministers using Ministry Scheduler Pro

Secures trained musicians and instrumentalists as needed

Purchases and maintains the parish liturgical music collection

Assures compliance with license and copyright laws

Technology

Recruits, trains, and schedules volunteers for the technology ministry

Prepares scripture and music slides for the church projection screens

Oversees and directs the live-stream of the 9 a.m. Sunday liturgy

Arranges for the maintenance and repair of the parish's instruments and sound system as needed

II. Other tasks

Helps to plan the parish liturgical calendar for the year

Prepares and monitors the liturgy budget

Participates in staff and Worship Committee meetings

Engages visibly at major parish events

Creates operating procedures for all aspects of the position

Other duties as assigned

III. Position Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in music, liturgy, or performance preferred.

Previous Experience In Accompanying Catholic Liturgy Preferred.

Demonstrated proficiency in piano performance. Ability to play the organ is a plus.

Demonstrated vocal proficiency in liturgical music

Ability to direct and accompany choirs, cantors, instrumentalists, and the congregation.

Familiarity with the Catholic liturgy, liturgical seasons, etc.

Broad knowledge of standard Catholic liturgical repertoire (e.g., Gather Hymnal) and contemporary (post-1998) Catholic liturgical music (e.g., Spirit and Song), as well as evangelical resources.

ADA Physical Requirements

The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods; use hands; reach with hands and arms. Close vision required for paperwork and computer. Able to utilize computer keyboard, monitor, and telephone. This role functions in an office environment and uses standard office equipment. Ability to lift 20 pounds.
