Director of Music

The Director of Music is responsible for planning, coordinating, and leading the music ministry of Mindekirken. This position provides leadership for worship music, directs the Mindekirken Choir, supervises music staff, and promotes the church's musical programs and traditions in support of the congregation's worship and outreach ministries. Employment contract will begin in early January 2027 Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1. Worship Music Leadership A. Coordinate Music for Weekly Sunday Worship Services Select choir anthems, hymns, and other musical selections appropriate to the liturgical season in consultation with the Pastor, Organist, and/or Music and Worship Committee. Direct the Adult Choir at weekly rehearsals and worship services beginning the week after Labor Day and continuing through the Sunday preceding Memorial Day. Prepare the choir to lead congregational singing by familiarizing members with upcoming hymns, liturgical settings, and alternate worship materials. Arrange for guest musicians and special music when the choir is not scheduled to sing. Provide the Church Office with musical information needed for weekly bulletins and worship materials in a timely manner. B. Direct Music for Special Services and Events Rehearse and direct the Adult Choir for special services and events, including: Syttende Mai Service Annual Nordic Julekonsert Christmas Eve Candlelight Service Holy Week Services LEIF Festival Events Santa Lucia Program (optional; additional compensation to be negotiated) 2. Music Ministry Development Develop and strengthen the musical programs of Mindekirken. Recruit, encourage, and mentor volunteer choir members. Supervise music staff, including the organist, soloists, and paid choir members. Assist in the recruitment, evaluation, and selection of candidates for music staff vacancies and make recommendations to the Church Council. Maintain a collaborative working relationship with the annual LEIF Festival and its music programming. Enhance Mindekirken's visibility by planning, scheduling, and promoting concerts, recitals, and other music-related events within the congregation and the broader community. Administer expenditures from the Music Fund for choral music, equipment, guest musicians, and related needs. 3. Reporting Relationships The Director of Music reports to: The Music and Worship Committee Qualifications Required Qualifications Formal training and/or demonstrated experience in choral conducting and direction. Strong vocal coaching and rehearsal leadership skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with clergy, staff, volunteers, and committees. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Preferred Qualifications Formal training and/or demonstrated experience in vocal instruction. Familiarity with Norwegian sacred music, choral traditions, and hymnody. Experience planning music for liturgical worship in a church setting. Ability to recruit, motivate, and retain volunteer musicians. Compensation: Annual salary of $22,170 Time off: Employee may take up to six non-sequential Sundays (excluding Christmas and Easter) and associated rehearsals off during the normal choir season. The normal choir season begins the week after Labor Day and extends through the week prior to Memorial Day. As a Part Time position, no additional benefits are provided.
