**About the Appointment:**

Concordia College seeks a Director of Orchestral Activities for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning August 2027. The position offers the opportunity for a talented conductor to lead an orchestra that has garnered a reputation for award-winning musical quality at state, national, and international conferences, festivals, and competitions.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to nurture and maintain a reputation of excellence as a conductor, musician, and educator and will be responsible for the artistic leadership of the Concordia Orchestra, including programming, rehearsing, and performing. The Director of Orchestral Activities will collaborate on yearly projects with the Concordia choral ensembles, including the Christmas Concert and Masterworks; collaborate effectively with instrumental faculty and the conductor of Symphonia Orchestra; coordinate with staff to plan the logistical details of performances, including international touring and the annual domestic tours of the Concordia Orchestra; and organize the annual student concerto competition.

The successful candidate will display teaching excellence in both ensemble and classroom settings with major and non-major musicians within a liberal arts environment and serve in a collegial manner within the department and across the college.

The position requires a candidate who is a strong recruiter for both the Music Department and the College. The Director of Orchestral Activities will work closely with the Concordia Enrollment Office and the applied music faculty studios on recruitment endeavors, including nurturing strong and vibrant relationships with school orchestra programs throughout the region. The candidate will also be responsible for the artistic leadership of the annual Honor String Orchestra for promising high school students.

An additional teaching assignment may include courses in the Orchestral Conducting Certificate Program, Instrumental Conducting, Music Education, Master of Music Education program, courses in the candidate's area of expertise, and/or departmental need.

**About the Department:**

Concordia College is NASM accredited, and the Music Department enjoys a thriving and growing student population with nearly 200 music majors in music education, performance, and composition, due in part to its excellent reputation throughout the region. The department is the single largest on campus, with more than 30 faculty and over one-quarter of the entire student body participating in vocal and instrumental lessons and ensembles.

Many graduates pursue careers in music education, where the post-graduation employment rate is extremely high, while others pursuegraduate degrees at leading national institutions and/or careers in performing or creative activity.
The instrumental music program includes three concert bands, two orchestras, three jazz bands and a combo, chamber ensembles, and a number of other opportunities for students to engage with music as part of their undergraduate experience. In addition to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees, the department also offers a Master of Music in Music Education.

**Minimum Qualifications:**

* Earned master’s degree
* Evidence of dynamic leadership in the classroom, rehearsal, and performance environments

**Preferred qualifications:**

* Completed DMA or Ph.D.\*
+ *\*Doctorate required to be eligible for tenure*
* Demonstrated success/potential as an active collaborator that includes choral and instrumental forces
* Demonstrated success/potential for recruitment of music majors and non-majors to a collegiate orchestral program
* Demonstrated commitment to the study and performance of diverse repertoire representing a variety of musical traditions
* K-12 teaching experiences
