Job Details: Job Location: Elementary Campus - Santa Monica, CA 90404, Position Type: Part Time, Salary Range: $121.10 - $121.10 Hourly, Crossroads Elementary School is launching a new co-curricular instrumental music program for all 5th graders as part of a growing K–12 music initiative. Students will choose between saxophone and clarinet, with classes taught separately by instrument. This beginner-level course focuses on establishing core musical and instrumental fundamentals, preparing students for a smooth transition into middle school music programs and beyond.

Essential Job Functions: 

Instruction & Fundamental Skills: Teach foundational instrumental techniques, including proper posture, embouchure, breathing, hand placement, tone production, fingerings, and basic assembly/maintenance for saxophone and clarinet.
Music Literacy & Curriculum: Introduce and reinforce core music reading skills, including note recognition, rhythms, key signatures, dynamics, and basic music terminology appropriate for beginning 5th-grade students.
Lesson Planning & Communication: Develop and document detailed lesson plans for separate instrument classes, clearly communicating practice expectations to students, parents, and the program director.
Classroom & Differentiated Management: Structure engaging, age-appropriate group lessons that accommodate varying learning paces while fostering a positive, encouraging environment for first-time instrumentalists.
Rehearsal & Performance Preparation: Lead rehearsals prior to concerts, coordinate dress rehearsals, select age-appropriate repertoire, provide piano sheet music/accompaniment as needed, and direct students during live concert performances.
Program Building & Continuity: Prepare 5th graders with a solid foundation to ensure a smooth transition into middle school music programs and support the long-term growth of the K–12 instrumental music pipeline.

Additional Responsibilities: 

Create written narratives for each student at the grading periods.

Qualifications: Degree: Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Music (BM) in a woodwind instrument (specifically saxophone or clarinet) or Music Education.

Professional Experience & Practical Skills

Instrumental Proficiency: Performance-level skill on saxophone and clarinet, with strong secondary knowledge of standard woodwind fingerings, transposition, and embouchure mechanics.
Beginner Pedagogy: Demonstrated experience teaching elementary students or first-time musicians in private lessons, group studios, or student-teaching practicums.
Music Literacy & Accompaniment: Proficient in score reading, music theory, ear training, and basic piano accompaniment skills for rehearsals.

Physical Demands & Other Requirements

Physical Capability: Ability to lift a grand piano lid and safely move standard music room equipment (music stands, instrument cases, sound gear).
Background Checks: Ability to pass required state/district background checks and child abuse clearances. Online trainings as requested.
