My name is John Paul Carey, and I am the Founder and Executive Director of MovementPDX Music Festival Inc. — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Oregon City, Oregon, currently in Year 1 of our founding. Our mission is to advance music education, artist development, and meaningful community engagement through the vehicle of electronic music and live performance. We are building this organization from the ground up — and we are doing it the right way. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not retrofits here. They are part of the foundation itself.

Your name on our founding documents. Your lived experience, your decade of advocacy, and your irreplaceable community relationships shape how MovementPDX defines inclusion from its very first year. I want to be direct with you: this is not a symbolic seat. This is a structural leadership role in an organization built to last for 20 years and beyond — and the person who holds this seat in Year 1 will have shaped what this institution stands for in perpetuity.

In terms of the practical commitment this role requires, we are asking for approximately four to six hours per month — including quarterly in-person Board meetings here in Portland, DEI program advising, and support for community partnership work as it arises. This is a volunteer board seat with a two-year term, renewable by mutual Agreement. We respect your time and the extraordinary amount of work you are already doing. We would ask only what you can genuinely give.

I want to close by speaking plainly about the longer arc of what we are building. MovementPDX's twenty-year vision is to evolve from a 501(c)(3) nonprofit music festival into a fully endowed charitable foundation — one that permanently funds music education, artist development, and community arts programming across the entire Pacific Northwest. That foundation will only mean something if it was built on the right values from the very beginning. Equity is not a program initiative here. It is the load-bearing structure. The Director of DEI who helps us lay that structure in Year 1 will have left a permanent mark on what this institution is and what it stands for — long after any of us are still in these seats.

André — what you have built with Friends of Noise is remarkable. Not because it was easy, or because the support was there waiting for you, but because you built it anyway, year after year, for Portland's young people and its BIPOC communities, with a commitment that never seemed to waver. That is the kind of leadership MovementPDX needs on its founding Board. That is the kind of voice we need in the room when decisions are made.

I would genuinely love to connect — by phone, over coffee at a time and place that works for you, or at your new Kenton venue when the doors open. Whatever makes sense. I am easy to work with; I listen more than I talk, and I think you will find that this is an organization whose values are not performance — they are practice.

I look forward — sincerely — to hearing from you.

With deep respect and genuine excitement about what we might build together,

John Paul Carey

Core Values & Action Statements

PORTLAND, OREGON

"These are the principles that guide everything we build, every decision we make, and every relationship we carry."

LEVITY

We are at our best when we have fun together.

We lead with joy — in our meetings, our events, and our relationships, we make space for laughter as a sign of trust and connection. We design experiences that spark delight — for our artists, our audiences, and each other. We refuse to take ourselves so seriously that we forget why we started: because music is meant to move people. We celebrate small wins loudly and often — because progress deserves to feel good.We bring our whole selves to the table, knowing that when people feel free to be themselves, the best ideas show up. HUMILITY

Our greatest victories belong to the group.

We give credit generously and specifically — naming the people whose work made something great. We listen more than we speak, knowing that the best idea in the room isn't always ours.We ask for help before we struggle alone — because needing each other is a strength, not a weakness. We enter every partnership, conversation, and community with the assumption that we have something to learn. We measure our success by the elevation of the people around us, not by individual recognition. INTEGRITY

We hold ourselves to ethical standards even when no one is watching.

We do what we say we will do — and when we can't, we communicate early and honestly. We protect the interests of the artists and communities we serve, even when it costs us something. We make decisions we can defend publicly — in our finances, our partnerships, and our programming. We speak difficult truths with care, knowing that honesty delivered with respect is an act of respect itself. We hold every agreement — formal or informal — as a promise worth keeping. ABUNDANCE

There is enough success, recognition, and opportunity for all of us.

We collaborate before we compete — seeking partnerships with other organizations, artists, and communities rather than guarding our territory. We share resources, connections, and knowledge freely, trusting that generosity multiplies. We approach every challenge with the belief that a solution exists and that we have what it takes to find it.We celebrate the success of other organizations and artists in Portland's music community as a rising tide that lifts us all.We make decisions from a place of confidence, not scarcity — investing in quality, relationships, and people because we believe in what we're building. TENACITY

We are devoted to our purpose — and we do not quit on it.

We show up consistently — to our meetings, our community, and our commitments — especially when it's inconvenient. We treat every obstacle as information, not a stop sign — adjusting our approach without abandoning our mission. We build for the long game, making decisions that serve MovementPDX's five-year future, not just next month. We hold the vision steady when momentum is hard to find, trusting that sustained effort compounds over time.We finish what we start — knowing that follow-through is the rarest and most valuable form of leadership. Our Commitment

These values are not aspirational decorations. They are the operating system of MovementPDX. Every board member, advisor, artist, and partner who joins this organization agrees to live them out — in rooms where decisions are made, on stages where music is played, and in every conversation in between. We hold each other to them, gently and firmly, because the community we're building deserves nothing less.
