Older man, a sad widower who was once a musician like the protagonist in the story. Charles is the opposing force or the antagonist in this story. He is a bitter old man who is trying to give some advice but he is drunk. Everyone at the bar knows him but no one really talks to him. He is a part of the bar, his stool has his imprint on it.
