Lead Pianist

Position Summary for Lead Pianist: The Lead Pianist at Church of the Incarnation is responsible for leading music for all Eucharist services on piano. The Lead Pianist works closely with the priest in charge to ensure they understand the choice and progression of all music in each service, and completes whatever preparation necessary to lead the congregation professionally and gracefully through hymns and service music during worship. • (Either role) Coordinates with volunteer musicians (as needed) to rehearse in advance of worship; welcomes the participation of other skilled musicians during worship • (Director only) Supports the congregation as a cantor and/or director during worship (other musicians may also cant during the service, but the Director of Music is responsible for ensuring this responsibility is adequately covered). Required Qualifications: • (Either role) Excellence in piano and ability to learn new music with confidence and speed • (Either role) Competence or ability and willingness to gain competence in Episcopal/Anglican musical genres, e.g., Anglican chant, plainsong, Anglican hymnody, etc., particularly for special services (Holy Week) • (Director only) Proficiency navigating hymnals and online resources, learning new music, and making informed and appropriate selections for worship • (Director only) Strong vocal ability to lead singing as a cantor • (Director only) Demonstrated understanding of Eucharistic worship and the Church Year, or willingness to be formed in Episcopal/Anglican liturgical practice • (Director only) Ability to recognize basic theological concepts in Scripture readings and connect musical selections to themes • (Director only) Leadership experience, optimally with specific experience leading musicians • (Either role) Willingness and ability to lead music in a way that is consistent with Episcopal liturgical practice.
