Music Director

Start Date: to be negotiated with successful candidate, between May 1st and June 15th

Hours: average of 15 hours per week

Salary: Commensurate with experience, between $20 - $25 per hour. UUCV makes a strong effort to comply with UUA Fair Compensation standards. To that end pay levels for this position equate to the recommended Music Director pay range in the UUA Guidelines.

Reports to: Minister

Supervises: accompanists, featured musicians, song leaders, musicians hired for special services, volunteer choir manager, and volunteer music librarian

Schedule: Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, other times to be negotiated. This position gets one Sunday off a month.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Position Summary:
The music director’s ministry falls into two main areas:
-Planning, organizing, teaching, and presenting music (including choir) for Sunday worship
-Collaborating with the music committee as it supports music to advance the mission of the church

Essential Responsibilities:

-Rehearses and conducts choir at worship services on 21 Sundays per year, with weekly evening rehearsals; provides leadership for annual choir retreat
-Recruits, schedules, and coaches featured musicians and song leaders to present music in Sunday morning worship services
-Oversees coordination of music for special services
-Oversees submission and confirms accuracy of all music information for publication
-Oversees maintenance of the music library
-Oversees the care and maintenance of musical instruments
-Schedules, confirms, and manages remuneration for accompanists and hired musicians
-Meets regularly with minister, accompanists, and staff for communication and coordination
-Oversees and submits all music-related budget requests
-Manages the music budget and Music Reserve Funds, collaborating with music committee where appropriate
-Provides guidance to music committee chair
-Meets regularly with music committee
-Consults with minister, worship associates, accompanists, featured musicians, and song leaders to select appropriate music for worship

Additional responsibilities to be negotiated at point of hire:

Provides vocals or instrumental music at worship services three Sundays per year
Provides music for special services up to six times per year
Accepts right of first refusal for special services outside of contractual obligations

Qualifications & Skills

To be considered candidates must:
1) be able to hear with the acuity necessary to conduct the choir,
2) be reliable, able to work with minimal supervision, and dedicated to quality work,
3) be able to pass a National Criminal Background check.

Additional skills desired:

A successful candidate will exhibit clear understanding of choral resources/choral teaching techniques/presenting music for worship. Three to five years experience in choral directing and/or vocal coaching is highly desirable. Strong organization and management skills are essential in working with staff and lay leadership. A bachelor’s degree in music is preferred but other experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. Knowledge of Unitarian Universalism and copyright law, and instrumental or vocal experience is welcome.

-Paid time off (PTO) includes combined vacation and sick days. The Director will be given 3 weeks each year of PTO plus paid holiday time off for each of the following days: New Year’s day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
-Employee will be eligible to purchase health insurance and dental insurance at their own expense.
-Employee will be eligible to enroll in a 401k retirement plan but the church will not contribute to it.
