Music Director

The Director of Music works collaboratively with the Pastor to provide music leadership and support for the Church’s music programs. This person works with the pastor to selecting hymns and music for worship, special events, seasonal worship. This person supervises the Church Organist, directs the choir, and provides an atmosphere in worship that compliments scripture and the overall theme for worship.

To provide leadership and support for the Church’s music programs.

Accountability

Accountable to the Pastor as Head of Staff, Personnel Committee, and Session.

Qualifications

 Bachelor of Music Degree, Sacred Music Degree or certification is preferred but not required.

 Have a wide range of knowledge in Gospel Music, Hymnology, Classical, and other Sacred Music, as well as worship planning.

 Ability to direct a choir and to consult with the Pastor about special music and selection of hymns.

 Knowledge of and ability to implement choral vocal technique.

 Good communication and organizational skills.

 Ability to work well with others. Knowledge and awareness of the Presbyterian Church

USA, its theology, and its basic operations.

Responsibilities

 Rehearse and conduct the choir.

 Recruit and maintain music personnel and choir members.

 Long-range planning for worship services (Sunday mornings and special events: i.e., Christmas Eve, Watch Night, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, etc.) and special seasonal music. May include larger works with soloists and instrumentalists or handbells. Consult with Sister Congregation for special joint services.

 Review, select and purchase music that follows the church lectionary and reflects a diversity of styles. Be open and willing to introduce new music, new and contemporary music styles and genre for the choir and congregation.

 Supervise all music staff members.

 Coordinate children and youth music programs.

 Consult with pastor on hymn selections.

 Rehearse instrumentalists for special worship services.

 Coordinate music for services anytime.

 Oversee music budget.

 Attend Worship Committee meetings.

 Arrange for maintenance and tuning of pianos, organ and handbells as needed.

 Maintain or develop a music library and copyright reporting to appropriate entities for live-streaming worship services.

 Stay current on Covid pandemic information and safety protocols, especially for singers. Be flexible with “in person” versus “virtual church.” Knowledge of and experience with basic audio/video technology is a plus.

 Other music related duties as requested or assigned by the Pastor. The Director of Music Ministry is accountable to the Pastor as Head of Staff, Personnel Committee and Session. This is a part-time position, up to 20 hours per week. This person must pass a criminal background check. There are no medical benefits.

Evaluations will be conducted once per year in a face-to-face meeting with the Personnel Committee.
