Music Director

About Us

Christian Temple Church, located in Catonsville, MD, has a vacancy for a Music Director. This is an approximately 20 hours per week, year-round position. We are an historic member of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, with an Open and Affirming Congregation. Each Sunday worship service opens with this statement: “As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to God’s table as God has welcomed us.”

We're continuing to recover from the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic and have aspirations to reinstate music programs that have lapsed. Every worship service is livestreamed and recorded.

Our music ministries include:

The Chancel Choir (15–20 members), directed and accompanied by the Music Director, provides weekly music. Usually one anthem is sung, as well as an introit and a benediction response.The Bell Choir (10 members, with their own director) provides monthly music.The Redeeming Grass Band (currently 3 members) provides music approximately quarterly.We hope to restart a Children’s Choir if there is interest. The Music Director’s role in it is open to discussion, from leading it to supporting a volunteer.

Role Description

Worship Planning

Collaborate with the pastoral staff to plan music for our weekly Sunday worship service at 11 a.m., while working with the Worship Committee and all groups in our music ministry.Coordinate with the Bell Choir director and the Redeeming Grass Band to schedule and plan their music in our services.Organize special musical events, such as concerts and workshops, that are open to the congregation and the greater community.Coordinate our two annual community concerts, the Christmas Concert in mid-December and a Summer Concert, and engage outside musicians if desired. Both feature the Chancel Choir, as well as other solo and instrumental groups as available.

Organ and Piano Playing

Showcase your organ and piano performance/accompanist skills during weekly Sunday worship services.Play for weddings, funerals, and special events as needed.Make sure the organ, piano(s), and bells receive regular maintenance and upkeep.

Choir Directing

Rehearse and conduct the Chancel (adult) Choir. Rehearsals have traditionally been Thursday nights, September through May, 7:30–9:30 p.m.Work with soloists and instrumentalists outside of rehearsals as necessary.

Administrative

Attend weekly staff meetings as scheduled by the pastor, and give updates to the church board when needed.Collaborate with the Worship Committee to prepare and manage the music budget.

Qualifications

Experience in conducting choirs, playing the organ and piano, and planning worship.A team player who can collaborate with the pastor, Worship Committee, and other music groups (Bell Choir, Redeeming Grass Band) on worship planning.Must be available for all major Christian holidays.

Compensation

Salary and benefits are from $35,000-$42,000, commensurate with experience. A probationary period of six months is optional.
