# Music Director - Prince of Peace Catholic Church - Lake Villa - Vic I

The Director of Music facilitates music for all liturgical celebrations. Responsibilities include directing and planning regularly scheduled liturgies on weekends, holy days, and other celebrations throughout the liturgical year; directing, scheduling, and rehearsing all music assemblies; conducting the church choir; recruiting and forming cantors and music volunteers; scheduling music and instrumentalists at weekend Masses, holy days, and seasonal liturgies; providing music for the Faith Formation program; supervising audiovisual equipment; and coordinating music for funerals, weddings, and quinceñeras.
## Essential Duties and Responsibilities

### Pastoral Musician as a Professional Musician
Professional development is a mutual responsibility of the musician and the parish. Maintaining a competent level of professionalism includes:
- Practicing to improve or maintain skills in voice, conducting, and the instruments the musician is expected to perform
- Researching and mastering liturgical music
- Pursuing educational advancement in musical skills related to parish needs (e.g., organ, choral directing, vocal pedagogy)
- Keeping current with official statements and documents on music and liturgy, as well as developments in the pastoral field
- Studying various liturgical and musical publications
- Maintaining membership in professional organizations and attending national and area conferences and workshops
- Completing periodic coursework in pastoral liturgy and liturgical music
### Pastoral Musician as Administrator
Administrative responsibilities include:
- Establishing liturgical music policies in conjunction with the Liturgy Commission and pastoral staff, considering diocesan and national guidelines
- Formulating a music budget for the parish worship program
- Developing and maintaining a liturgical music library of various styles and genres for assembly, choir, cantor, and instrumentalists
- Maintaining the parish's musical instruments
- Recommending purchases of new instruments, sound equipment, hymnals, and music supplies
- Securing other musicians as needed for special celebrations such as Christmas, Easter, and Confirmation
- Supporting the cultural diversity of the parish and its liturgies
The Director of Music Ministry should demonstrate the ability to:
- Select and teach new music to the assembly
- Develop the musicianship of cantors and other musicians
- Nurture the musicianship of youth
- Serve as a resource to the parish and others involved in ministry
- Provide liturgical guidance in sensitive pastoral situations, such as preparing weddings and funerals
- Lead and animate the community's sung prayer
- Administer a multifaceted music program, including short- and long-range planning, budget administration, music library development and maintenance, scheduling, and timely communication with other liturgical ministers
- Work collaboratively with the Pastor, parish clergy and staff, musicians, and other ministers
- Sing and play independently, without the assistance of other musicians
## Requirements and Qualifications

### Catholic Faith
Practice of the Catholic faith is required. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner consistent with and supportive of the Church's mission and purpose. Public behavior must not violate the Church's faith, morals, or laws, or archdiocesan policies.
### Education and Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in music or its equivalent, and/or experience as a Music Director in a church
- Musical leadership requiring skills in piano/organ, voice, and conducting
- Skills and experience may be required in other areas such as contemporary instrumental ensembles, orchestration, chant, children's choirs, composition, and familiarity with musical styles of various cultures within the community
- Thorough understanding of Roman Catholic liturgical theology and praxis
- Knowledge of the history and repertoire of sacred music
### Other Skills and Abilities
- High level of organizational and interpersonal skills
- Attention to detail and ability to work well with others
- Ability to read and analyze routine correspondence and compose appropriate responses
- Ability to respond effectively to common inquiries from internal and external sources
- Ability to effectively present reports and information to constituents
- Ability to apply appropriate mathematical concepts and operations in establishing and maintaining budgets
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form
## Working Conditions
Working hours are not limited to an 8-hour day and may vary according to liturgical feasts and seasons or special sacramental celebrations. This person must be available in the evening and on weekends, and during significant liturgical feasts and Holy Week. Extensive computer work is required for parish and ministry communications.
## Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
- Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, and see up close and from afar
- Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling light-weight objects and materials (15 pounds)
## Compensation and Benefits
The Archdiocese of Chicago offers a comprehensive total rewards package including competitive compensation and benefit programs. An employee's pay within the salary range will be based on many factors including but not limited to relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and organizational needs.
