Summary
The Music Director directs and oversees the music of Grace Meridian Hill church’s Sunday worship services, and works closely with the Lead Pastor. The role involves playing keys, band leading, song selection and arrangement, training, administration, and development of musicians and volunteers. Grace Meridian Hill is a multicultural congregation in the heart of Washington, DC. The Music Director should be skilled in playing gospel music, along with a wide range of musical traditions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Sunday Services: Keyboardist & Band Leader
Select songs and make arrangements (vocally/band) for weekly services (4-6 songs) Lead pre-service rehearsals; play and lead band members/vocalists through weekly sets Make adjustments to charts/arrangement adjustments before/during rehearsals Team Leadership/Administration
Serve as primary point of contact to all band members and vocalists Set tone and vision for Music Team; maintain healthy, collaborative spiritual environment Meet with Lead Pastor to discuss music and logistics (every 2 weeks) Schedule musicians and vocalists using Planning Center online. Manage payment/invoices for paid musicians; maintain budget for music ministry Arrange for substitute musicians when instrumentalists are absent New Music, Arrangements, Recordings
Create arrangements and charts for any new music Plan to introduce new songs (1-2 songs per quarter), as well as seasonal songs, choir/small ensembles (e.g., Advent, Black History Month, Holy Week) Create instrumental tracks/recordings for new music as needed Rehearsals (as needed)
Lead vocalists (in particular) in rehearsal, ensuring vocalists learn their parts, providing vocal notes Lead band members in rehearsals, preparing charts and recordings, as needed Special rehearsals for new music, choirs, or other special/seasonal music Recruit new vocalists as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to play a variety of musical styles, especially contemporary gospel, jazz, traditional hymns at a professional level Previous experience (or equivalent) leading a band and music ministry of a local church Personal faith in Jesus Christ and a vision for music/worship consistent with the commitments of Grace Meridian Hill Formal training in piano/keyboard preferred; ability to lead congregational singing vocally a plus Ability (skill) and character (tone, style) to lead and instruct singers with no prior formal training Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills Familiarity with Planning Center Online a plus

Position Type: Part-time Hours: 20 hours per week Annual pay: $27-29k Reports to Lead Pastor
