**Function:**
The Music Therapist evaluates and provides services to disabled students who demonstrate a noticeable interest in music in order to assist them in accomplishing their individual educational program goals.
**Reports To:**
Director for Special Education
**Responsibilities:**
Instructional Management
1. Works with campus staff to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate the music therapy program on a systematic basis to ensure that each is responsive to the student.
2. Utilizes program outcomes (Health Care Plans, Individualized Education Program (IEP), Health/Diagnosis database) for corrective action, programmatic improvement, and recognition of success.
3. Provides and coordinates music therapy strategies, resources, and materials programmatically to campus special education staff to support instructional goals of specific students.
4. Participates in the decisions relating to appropriate placement of special education students for instructional purposes at the campus and District levels.
5. Demonstrates effective therapeutic strategies and techniques to improve student success
School/Organization Climate
1. Communicates and promotes high expectations for special education staff and students in the music program
2. Promotes use of positive discipline management plan to special education classrooms
3. Recognizes/rewards music therapy students' accomplishments in a variety of ways
4. Facilitates conflict resolution through the use of effective communication skills
School/Organizational Improvement
1. Assists at the departmental level in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of special education policies, programs, and curriculum as they relate to the music therapy program.
2. Utilizes information systems to monitor special education students' progress as the basis for educational program improvement (e.g., assessments, attendance, IEP mastery, etc.).
3. Assesses annually (through the Admissions Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process) attainment of IEP objectives and analyzes appropriate placement
4. Analyzes campus daily schedules and recommends to principals alternative schedules to distribute special education contact hours evenly throughout the instructional day.
5. Collaborates with staff to support effective service delivery models
Personnel Management
1. Evaluates personnel as "other appraiser" in accordance with state and District policies.
2. Encourages participation by special education staff in staff development options available to address program/District/employee goals.
3. Serves as leader of special education staff development sessions.
4. Communicates expectations to special education staff regarding job performance.
Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management
1. Ensures students are coded accurately on ARD service page for monitoring purposes.
2. Facilitates prompt and accurate reports from campus to special education office.
3. Monitors the use and storage of materials and equipment to comply with state/federal laws and regulations.
Student Management
1. Cooperates with principal staff, and parents in identifying and solving school and student issues as they relate to music therapy students.
2. Facilitates delivery of support services to students (e.g., family counseling, special health needs, etc.).
3. Demonstrates effective classroom strategies and techniques for improving classroom and student issues.
4. Conducts conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning program. school, and student issues.
5. Works cooperatively with staff to explore more appropriate placement and programming of students.
School/Community Relations
1. Promotes positive staff and community relations through effective dissemination of information.
2. Communicates clearly the district's music therapy program, goals, and new directions to staff and parents to broaden their knowledge of the program.
3. Responds to the concerns of parents and the community in a timely manner.
Professional Growth and Development
1. Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner.
2. Participates in available employee development activities.
3. Uses information provided through evaluative feedback to improve performance.
4. Assumes responsibility for acquiring knowledge and skills necessary for fulfilling job duties and improving leadership skills.
