Position: Musician II - SR-13 Plays a musical instrument and/or its related double in the Hawai`i County or West Hawai`i band at public performances, and performs other related duties as assigned.This is an advanced level in the Musician series and plays at the level five (5) proficiency. The incumbent must be able to perform on multiple parts within the selection, including solo parts.There is one (1) immediate permanent part‑time vacancy with the Hawai'i County Band in Kailua-Kona for Clarinet or Trumpet.Special Working Conditions for Hawai'i County BandWorks irregular hours: Must be able to work Tuesday and Thursday evenings for rehearsals, weekends and holidays for performances; average of 18 hours per month.Must be physically able to march in parades, including inclement weather.Special Working Conditions for West Hawai'i BandWorks irregular hours: Must be able to work Tuesday evenings for rehearsals, weekends and holidays for performances; average of 9 hours per month.Must be physically able to march in parades, including inclement weather.ResponsibilitiesPlays second part for a musical instrument and/or its related double in larger sections during band performances; may be assigned to play higher musical parts.Performs solos occasionally.Participates in parades and concerts, which include standing or sitting performances.Participates in full band rehearsals, sectionals, or small group rehearsals, including marching practice.Warms up, winds down, tunes up, sets up, and breaks down all equipment.Studies musical scores and memorizes parts.Cares for and maintains music folders in an orderly fashion.Transports personal instrument(s) and equipment to and from rehearsals; cares for and maintains instrument(s) and equipment.Performs other related duties as assigned.Training and ExperienceCompletion of the ninth grade.Experience playing in a concert band or orchestra or in a musical group over a four‑year period.Note: Applicants will be required to audition before the County band auditioning committee.ExaminationAll applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.Knowledge ofThe musical instrument(s) to which assigned, including literature, history and performance techniques; the fundamentals of music and playing in a concert band or orchestra; musical compositions for the instrument(s) assigned.Ability toPlay the assigned musical instrument(s) in the band at the level six proficiency with the expected degree of skill, technique, and interpretation, and the appropriate tone, rhythm, and intonation; read music proficiently and memorize parts; understand and follow oral and written instructions; adapt and adjust individual performance to suit the needs of the group; carry instrument and march in parades; establish effective working relationships with co-workers.Physical Requirements Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
