Young Musicians Unite (YMU) is on a mission to provide free, high-quality music education to every student in Miami-Dade, regardless of socio-economic background. We collaborate with schools to inspire personal development, foster community, and prepare future leaders through in-school and after-school music programs. Our unique approach focuses on building a comprehensive music education pathway for 5th–12th grade students, with a strong emphasis on Title I schools.
Position Summary:
The Drumline Teaching Artist will lead percussion-based ensemble classes that build rhythm skills, musical discipline, and team spirit. This class is geared toward students interested in marching band, street percussion, and performance-based drumming, with an emphasis on stick control, rudiments, and group coordination.
Key Responsibilities:Instruction & Curriculum Delivery
• Deliver structured drumline lessons aligned with YMU’s semester-long percussion curriculum.
• Teach students rudiments, stick control, cadences, and ensemble performance techniques.
• Guide students in developing coordinated drumline routines and performance pieces.
• Introduce students to marching fundamentals, timing, and musical discipline.
Classroom Management & Student Engagement
• Establish clear routines, behavior expectations, and rehearsal norms for classes of 20–25 students.
• Maintain a structured rehearsal environment while leading large group percussion instruction.
• Promote teamwork, discipline, and confidence through collaborative drumming activities.
• Monitor student progress and provide regular encouragement and feedback.
Equipment & Technology
• Oversee proper setup, use, and care of percussion instruments and equipment.
• Coordinate the distribution and storage of drums, sticks, harnesses, and practice pads.
• Implement routines for equipment management and classroom organization.
Assessment & Reporting
• Track student participation, musical development, and ensemble progress.
• Evaluate student performance through rehearsals, demonstrations, and performances.
• Submit basic participation and progress reports as required by YMU and partner schools.
Collaboration & Program Development
• Work with school staff and YMU program leaders to support student engagement.
• Participate in scheduled program observations and feedback sessions.
• Support student performances at assemblies, school events, parades, and showcases.
Qualifications:
• Experience leading drumline, marching band, or percussion ensembles
• Strong skills in snare, tenor, bass drum, and auxiliary percussion
• Ability to manage student groups with energy and discipline
• Background working with middle and high school students
• Commitment to using rhythm as a tool for personal growth and teamwork
Schedule & Compensation:
• Classes are taught in 90-minute classroom blocks with groups of 20–25 students (subject to change).
• Instruction takes place during the school day or in after-school programs, depending on the school schedule.
• Hourly rate: $35.00/hour.
• Paid prep time and professional development sessions are provided as scheduled.
Mandatory Professional Development & Hiring Incentive
All instructors are required to participate in a two-week Mandatory Professional Development (PD) Program before the start of the school year. This training prepares instructors to lead music classrooms successfully in YMU partner schools.
Tentative Dates: Last two weeks of July
Schedule: Monday–Friday for 2 weeks
Time: 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM daily (4 hours per day)
Meals: Breakfast will be provided each day.
During this PD program, instructors will receive training and hands-on preparation in the following areas:
• Classroom Management Bootcamp
• Curriculum Immersion (Band, Drumline, or Modern Band pathways)
• Compliance & Reporting Procedures
• Mentorship Pairing with experienced instructors
• Micro-Teaching Round 1 & Round 2
• Final Readiness Evaluation
• Final Schedule Confirmation
Professional Development Incentive:
• $600 completion stipend awarded upon completion of the full two-week PD program.
• $400 additional hiring incentive bonus awarded after 6 months of active employment.
