Young Musicians Unite (YMU) is on a mission to provide free, high-quality music education to every student in Miami-Dade, regardless of socio-economic background. We collaborate with schools to inspire personal development, foster community, and prepare future leaders through in-school and after-school music programs. Our unique approach focuses on building a comprehensive music education pathway for 5th Grade, Middle School and High School students, with a strong emphasis on Title I schools.
Position Summary:
The Modern Band Teaching Artist will lead ensemble-based music classes focusing on contemporary styles such as rock, pop, hip-hop, and R&B. Students will learn performance skills, collaborative songwriting, and stage presence through hands-on instruction on instruments like electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and voice.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction & Curriculum Delivery
Deliver structured lessons aligned with YMU’s Modern Band curriculum.
Teach students foundational skills in guitar, bass, drums, keys, vocals, and ensemble performance.
Guide students in learning repertoire, basic music theory, rhythm, and performance technique.
Prepare student bands for live performances and collaborative music projects.
Classroom Management & Student Engagement
Establish classroom routines and behavior expectations for modern band classes of 20–25 students.
Maintain a focused rehearsal environment while managing multiple instruments and small band groups.
Encourage collaboration, creativity, and confidence through student-led musical exploration.
Provide regular feedback and support to help students develop musically.
Equipment & Technology
Set up and manage band equipment, including amplifiers, cables, instruments, and microphones.
Ensure proper care, organization, and storage of instruments and equipment.
Implement equipment-use routines to maintain an organized rehearsal environment.
Assessment & Reporting
Track student participation and musical progress throughout the semester.
Assess student growth through rehearsals, performance preparation, and group projects.
Submit required participation or progress reports to YMU and school staff.
Collaboration & Program Development
Collaborate with school staff and YMU program leadership to support student success.
Participate in scheduled coaching, feedback, and observation sessions.
Support student showcases, performances, and school music events.
Qualifications:
Proficiency on multiple instruments commonly used in modern bands
Experience leading youth ensembles or bands
Strong classroom management and communication skills
Experience working with middle or high school students
Passion for music education and youth empowerment
Schedule & Compensation:
Classes are taught in 90-minute classroom blocks with groups of 20–25 students (subject to change).
Instruction takes place during the school day or in after-school programs, depending on the school schedule.
Hourly rate: $35.00/hour.
Paid prep time and professional development sessions are provided as scheduled.
Mandatory Professional Development & Hiring Incentive
All instructors are required to participate in a two-week Mandatory Professional Development (PD) Program before the start of the school year. This training prepares instructors to lead music classrooms successfully in YMU partner schools.
Tentative Dates: Last two weeks of July
Schedule: Monday–Friday for 2 weeks
Time: 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM daily (4 hours per day)
Meals: Breakfast will be provided each day.
During this PD program, instructors will receive training and hands-on preparation in the following areas:
Classroom Management Bootcamp
Curriculum Immersion (Band, Drumline, or Modern Band pathways)
Compliance & Reporting Procedures
Mentorship Pairing with experienced instructors
Micro-Teaching Round 1 & Round 2
Final Readiness Evaluation
Final Schedule Confirmation
Professional Development Incentive:
$600 completion stipend awarded upon completion of the full two-week PD programs.
$400 additional hiring incentive bonus awarded after 6 months of active employment.
