Young Musicians Unite (YMU) is on a mission to provide free, high-quality music education to every student in Miami-Dade, regardless of socio-economic background. We collaborate with schools to inspire personal development, foster community, and prepare future leaders through in-school and after-school music programs. Our unique approach focuses on building a comprehensive music education pathway for 5th–12th grade students, with a strong emphasis on Title I schools.
*Position Summary:**
The Music Production Teaching Artist will lead hands-on, project-based music technology classes for middle and high school students in YMU partner schools. Using iPads and GarageBand, the instructor will teach foundational music production, digital music theory, and beat-making in an engaging and supportive environment. This is a classroom-based position with structured curriculum support and performance-based evaluation methods.
*Key Responsibilities:*Instruction & Curriculum DeliveryDeliver structured music production lessons aligned with YMU's semester-long curriculum.Teach students how to use GarageBand and Soundtrap to create beats, record audio, manipulate samples, and understand music theory.Guide students in producing and presenting original music projects, including midterms and finals.Introduce genre-specific techniques and digital audio principles (e.g., MIDI, EQ, FX, sequencing).*Classroom Management & Student EngagementEstablish clear routines, behavior expectations, and classroom norms for students using electronic equipment.Promote a culture of respect, collaboration, and creativity among diverse learners.Monitor individual progress and provide formative and summative feedback.Encourage SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) and personal expression through music.*Equipment & TechnologyEnsure proper setup, use, and care of classroom technology (iPads, headphones, chargers).Facilitate onboarding to digital platforms such as Google Classroom for project submissions and communication.Implement and enforce classroom tech-use policies and storage routines.*Assessment & ReportingTrack student progress through participation logs, performance-based assessments, and skill mastery.Administer bi-weekly quizzes and regular project evaluations.Submit quarterly academic, effort, and conduct grades to in-school staff.Maintain communication logs and report significant student issues to the Program Director.*Collaboration & Program DevelopmentPartner with in-school music teachers and site staff to ensure alignment with student needs and school culture.Participate in scheduled observations and feedback sessions with YMU program staff.Support student showcase opportunities and encourage participation in performances and presentations.*Qualifications:Prior experience teaching music production or digital audio technology preferred.Proficiency in GarageBand or similar DAWs (e.g., Logic Pro, FL Studio).Familiarity with iOS/iPad-based production environments.Ability to manage a classroom and engage students from diverse backgrounds.Strong interpersonal and communication skills.Commitment to YMU’s educational values and student-centered learning.*Schedule & Compensation:Classes are taught in 90-minute classroom blocks with groups of 20–25 students (subject to change).Instruction takes place during the school day or in after-school programs, depending on the school schedule.Hourly rate: $35.00/hour.Paid prep time and professional development sessions are provided as scheduled.*Mandatory Professional Development & Hiring Incentive**
All instructors are required to participate in a two-week Mandatory Professional Development (PD) Program before the start of the school year. This training prepares instructors to lead music classrooms successfully in YMU partner schools.
*Tentative Dates: Last two weeks of July*Schedule: Monday–Friday for 2 weeks*Time: 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM daily (4 hours per day)*Meals: Breakfast will be provided each day.
