School of Rock – Summer Creek | Houston, TX
Reports to: General Manager / Music Director
School of Rock Summer Creek is hiring a high-level Piano/Keys Instructor to develop students from beginner through advanced and prepare them for live performance. This role is for experienced musicians and educators who run structured, intentional lessons, maintain high standards, and consistently drive measurable student progress.
The Role
You will coach students to become confident, versatile keyboardists by developing:
Technique (hand position, dexterity, coordination, control)
Music theory and keyboard literacy
Improvisation and stylistic fluency (rock, pop, etc.)
Reading, ear training, and repertoire development
Stage readiness for live performance
This is not a “just play songs” environment. We expect focused, outcome-driven instruction from first-time beginners to advanced players.
Core Responsibilities
Deliver high-quality, structured one-on-one piano/keys lessons
Adapt teaching approach across beginner, intermediate, and advanced students
Prepare students for rehearsals and live performances
Set clear goals and assign weekly practice
Track and communicate student progress consistently
Collaborate with other instructors and school leadership
Non-Negotiables
On time = early (15 minutes before first lesson)
Same-day lesson notes, every lesson
Prepared, intentional lesson plans for every student
Professional, proactive communication with parents and staff
Maintain a focused, productive lesson environment
What Success Looks Like
Top instructors:
Show clear student progress within the first 60–90 days
Retain students through strong relationships and results
Consistently prepare students who are confident on stage
Communicate proactively with families and leadership
Qualifications (Minimum Bar)
5+ years performing and/or teaching piano/keys
Strong foundation in technique, theory, and contemporary styles
Ability to teach beginners through advanced students
Experience coaching rock, pop, and contemporary music
Proven ability to work with youth and varying skill levels
High level of reliability and professionalism
Preferred:
Multi-instrument ability (guitar, vocals, etc.)
Experience with improvisation and band settings
Formal training in piano pedagogy or music education
Not a Fit If You:
Struggle with punctuality or consistency
“Wing” lessons without structure
Avoid teaching fundamentals (technique + theory)
Can’t adapt to different student levels
Treat teaching as a casual side gig
