Songleader and Instrumental Musician - Sunday Evening Service

Overview:

This role leads community singing and provides instrumental music for a Sunday evening dinner service at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder. Community singing without hymnals or sheet music (songs in the style of The Singing Resistance or Music that Makes Community) during the service deepens our relationships to ourselves, to each other, and to something larger than any of us. Instrumental music before and after the service creates a grounding and supportive space.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder (UUCB) is a vibrant, highly progressive religious community of 350+ members and friends growing quickly. Dinner church is a gentle, restorative evening of grounding and connecting over a meal before the week begins. Through ritual and reflection, silence and singing – but most of all through shared food and honest conversation – we help each other put the fragmented parts of our lives together into a whole.

Core Responsibilities:

Sunday Evening Music. Offering instrumental music before and after the service and occasionally during. Songleading three songs during the service, including teaching as needed and supporting participants in adding harmony. Services are 5:00-6:30pm Sundays, you would be expected to be present 4:00-7:00. Typically you would lead three Sundays each month; we plan the schedule at least three months in advance.
Planning during the week. A weekly 30-minute video call or in-person meeting with the music director and other staff. Occasionally you’ll attend in-person planning meetings with program staff. The focus is on translating the theme of the service or the desired mood into selections to play or sing, (i.e. what music will best fit the theme of the service that week?).

Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience in songleading, teaching by ear, and deepening the community singing skills among singers of widely differing skill.
Demonstrated experience as an instrumental musician. While guitar seems like a natural fit, we are open to a variety of instruments and to using different instruments at different times.
Experience collaborating with other musicians to plan musical selections and communicating in a timely manner by email, text or call as needed.
Familiarity and appreciation for liberal religion.
