Technical Theater Teaching Artist

Program: Musical Theater Production – TBD

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00 - 5:15 at Eliza Chappell Elementary School, classes start January 5 but auditions will be in December. Preparations will begin in December, with a site visit in early December. Auditions will take place Dec 15 and 17 with a meeting for interested crew students on one of those days.

Classes start January 5, 2027 and continue based on a CPS schedule through the beginning of May (excluding CPS spring break). Shows will take place in May.

Job description

In search of a theater set designer, artist and teacher to lead students in creating a set for a production of a JR Musical theater production (show choice TBD). Teaching Artist will also lead Student Crew in being stagehands and cueing lights and sound. Does not have to be proficient in sound or lighting design, will only assist in those capacities depending on abilities.

With the director and music director, you will:

- collaborate on the set design

- collaborate on sourcing materials

- provide rough drawings that will serve as guides to discuss and ensure clarity of communication

- Collaborate with Music Director on sound design

- Collaborate with lighting designer on light cues

- Collaborate with costume designer to support crew in helping with costume measurements and distribution

- Attend occasional production meetings with production staff, Create timelines and collaborate on lesson plans for crew students

Independently you will:

- Lead the student stage crew to create the sets

- Communicate with crew students

- paint sets and backdrops

- organize, clean and maintain tools, supplies and work space

- create any necessary props (some are already in storage)

- strike the set

Qualifications:

- Experience creating theatrical sets

- Experience teaching visual art or stagecraft

- Experience backstage in a theatrical setting

- ability to successfully plan and lead a team

- Stage management experience

Job Type: PT Hourly

Pay: $25.00 - $40.00 per hour
