Vocal Musical Theatre Teaching Artist

Our vision is liberation through storytelling and the arts. South End Stories is seeking a Teaching Artist with experience in musical theater and vocal coaching to support a program at Franklin High School for the 2025–2026 school year. Teaching Artists help design and facilitate our programs and are the heart of South End Stories. Responsibilities • Design and write or learn a comprehensive curriculum in musical theater, vocal coaching, and performance • Provide group and individual vocal coaching, including vocal warm-ups, technique, repertoire work, and performance preparation • Co-facilitate after-school programming 1–2 days per week with one other TA and SES TA team • Attend and participate in pre/post program meetings and check-ins with SES staff, partner teachers, and school admin • Communicate material, equipment, and support needs to SES staff at least 3 days before programming begins • Demonstrate an understanding of best practices in anti-racism, trauma-conscious teaching, accessibility, inclusion, cultural competence, classroom management, and abuse prevention • Facilitate programming and attend all scheduled program dates (unless there is an emergency, in which case communicate with SES staff ASAP) • Collaborate to ensure the completion and proper submission of all required administrative materials (media releases, curriculum, reflections, attendance, assessments, timesheets, etc.) QualificationsProfessional Experience • Minimum 1 year of experience in K–12 education, musical theater instruction, vocal coaching, teaching artistry, or related fields • Experience co-teaching or collaborating with other educators and artists • Experience working with high school students (grades 9–12) in creative or performance-based settings Pedagogical & Teaching Expertise • Strong foundation in culturally sustaining pedagogy, arts integration, liberatory practices, and/or trauma-conscious approaches • Ability to design relevant, engaging curriculum and adapt it for diverse learners • Understanding of standards-based learning and Washington State Arts Learning Standards • Excellent facilitation skills and understanding of youth-centered, inquiry-based teaching Creative & Artistic Prowess • Expertise in musical theater, vocal performance, vocal technique, and choral/ensemble singing • Ability to coach students individually and in groups across varied skill levels • Experience prepping students for showcase or performance work Communication & Interpersonal Skills • Ability to articulate your thoughts, opinions, and observations using various formats but not limited to oral, written, organizational, administrative, and interpersonal communication • Ability to build trust and maintain communication with students, partner teachers, and SES staff • A Strategic thinker, able to carry out a shared educational and artistic vision Community & Cultural Knowledge • Knowledge of Seattle’s cultural and education landscape • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism and equity in arts education
