About the Role
Kenya Moses Voice Studio is hiring a Substitute Voice Teacher who will grow into a part-time role in our small studio, located in San Mateo, CA. This position will start by covering lessons on an as-needed basis for founder Kenya Moses, then transition into a part-time schedule with regular weekly hours.
This is an ideal fit for an experienced voice teacher who wants flexible weekday and Saturday hours, loves working with teens and adults, and thrives in a small studio environment.
About the Studio
Kenya Moses Voice Studio is a private voice studio serving singers across genres - classical, musical theater, contemporary/pop, R&B and more. KMVS students range from early teens building strong technique to adult professionals refining their artistry for performance, auditions, recording, or those just wanting to build more confidence in their speaking and singing voice.
KMVS teaches with intention: first build strong foundational techniques, which lead into real-world confidence and artistry. Lessons are warm, rigorous, and tailored to each singer's goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach one-on-one voice lessons to students ages 10+ (primarily teens and adults) across multiple genres.
- Deliver lessons in person at the studio (and/or online via Zoom when needed).
- Plan each lesson around the individual student's goals - technique, repertoire, performance prep.
- Track student progress with clear notes between lessons.
- Communicate professionally with students (and parents of minor students) about progress, and practice expectations.
- Substitute on short notice when needed; transition into recurring weekly slots over time.
- Represent the studio's standard of care in every interaction.
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
- Minimum 3+ years of private voice teaching experience (studio or equivalent).
- Demonstrated ability to teach across multiple genres - classical/musical theater AND contemporary styles strongly preferred.
- Comfortable teaching students of all ages, with most of your week spent with teens and adults.
- Strong foundational knowledge of vocal anatomy, healthy technique across registers (chest mix/head), breath support, resonance, and repertoire-building.
- Reliable, professional communication style; organized with scheduling and notes.
Preferred:
- Degree in Vocal Performance, Music Education, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).
- Performance credits or active performing career.
- Experience teaching both in-person and online.
- Comfortable working independently, as this is a small studio.
Schedule & Availability
This role begins as substitute coverage (as-needed) and grows into a part-time position with regular hours across these windows:
Monday – Friday: Mornings / early afternoons / early evenings
Monday – Friday: Late afternoons / early evenings
Saturday: Mornings / afternoons
Exact recurring schedule will be set once you transition into the part-time role. Substitute shifts may be scheduled with as little as 24 hours' notice depending on coverage needs.
Compensation
$45–$65 per lesson, depending on experience and lesson length.
Paid per lesson taught; no minimum hour guarantee during the substitute phase.
Part-time role includes a recurring weekly schedule once established.
